Migrating from MS Windows
This section will contain helpful information for people migrating from MS Windows to Ubuntu Linux.
- Backup your important files - Copy your important files to a CD or another computer.
- Backup your web browser links - Most browsers provide a way to export your web links (favorites) to a file. Export your links to a file, then backup the file.
- Backup your email addresses and contacts - Some email programs do not provide a helpfule way to export names and contacts, namely MS Outlook. Display your contacts in a window, select all, then paste to a text editor, e.g., Notepad. Save the file, then backup the file.
- Backup your email - This can be a problem with MS Outlook. One way is to export your email to spreadsheet CSV file, then backkup the file. Another way is to forward you mail to another email account. That can be an issue if you have a lot of mail. Consider getting a Google email account. They have lots of disk space.
Applications
- Blender - Blender normally opens in a window on MS Windows. On Ubuntu Linux Blender opens in a fixed size full screen without window frames making it difficult to work with multiple windows during a Blender session. You can easily force Blender to open in a re-sizable window by adding the -w command line option. You can do this in a terminal by typing blender -w or modify the menu launcher. To modify the menu launcher start Applications -> Accessories -> Alacarte Menu Editor. Highlight the Blender 3D modeller entry under Graphics and right-click properties, add a -w to the Command entry, and close. Next time you run Blender, it will open in a re-sizable window.
